Water is refreshing, cleansing, and clear, so it’s easy to understand why so many cultures and religions use water for symbolic purification. We will wash our hands twice during our seder. For this first washing, we wash our hands to prepare for the rituals to come. We do not say a blessing.
To wash your hands, you don’t need soap, but you do need a cup to pour water over your hands. Pour water on each of your hands three times, alternating between your hands.
(Pass around the cup and bowl. Continue while everyone takes their turn at washing their hands.)
This washing of our hands is a small act. It takes thirty seconds. And yet, how rarely in our daily lives do we stop before something begins — to prepare, to be present.
The Seder asks us to do that tonight.
Jewish tradition holds that memory is not passive. The people we have loved and lost do not simply disappear — they travel with us. They shaped who we are, what we value, and how we find purpose. In some sense, they are always at the Seder. Tonight, we make that explicit.
Before we go further, let's go around the table and say the name of someone you wish were sitting here tonight — an ancestor, a grandparent, a friend, someone who shaped you. You don't need to say anything more than their name if you don't want to. But if there's something you'd like to share about them, we'd love to hear it.
May their memories forever be a blessing.
