This invocation, written by two mothers, one Muslim and one Jewish, invites us to take their plea for peace into our hearts and into the world. It has been shared widely by Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and the Lab/Shul community.
Let us Light Candles for Peace
Two mothers, one plea:
Now, more than ever, during these days of so much crying,on the day that is sacred to both our religions, Friday, Sabbath Eve
Let us light a candle in every home – for peace:
A candle to illuminate our future, face to face,
A candle across borders, beyond fear.
From our family homes and houses of worship
Let us light each other up,
Let these candles be a lighthouse to our spirit
Until we all arrive at the sanctuary of peace.

Bo yavo v’rina nosei alumotav. A song of ascent: When God restores the prosperity of Zion, we will feel like dreamers. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with exultation: then said they among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us: therefore we rejoiced. Return our exiles, God, as You return streams to the south, and let those who sow in tears reap in joyful song. Those who go out weeping, bearing the burden of seeds, shall return joyfully with the harvested grain. Rabotai Nevarech רבותי נברך When a group of three or more have eaten together, it is customary for one to invite the others to join in the blessing after the meal. When a minyan is present, include the words in parentheses. Leader who says Grace starts with this: רַבּוֹתַי נְבָרֵךְ. The others respond:— יְהִי שֵׁם יְיָ מְבֹרָךְ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם. The leader continues with this: יְהִי שֵׁם יְיָ מְבֹרָךְ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם. בִּרְשׁוּת רַבּוֹתַי, נְבָרֵךְ שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ. The others respond:— בָּרוּךְ (אֱלֹהֵינוּ) שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ וּבְטוּבוֹ חָיִינוּ. Blessed is the name of God now and forever. With your permission, let us thank God whose food we have eaten. Blessed is God whose food we have eaten and through whose goodness we live. With abundant goodness we have never lacked, and may we never lack sustenance forever in God’s great name. God sustains all, does good to all, and provides food for all the creatures created. Blessed is Adonai, who provides food for all. For all these blessings we thank Adonai our God with praise. May God’s name be praised by every living being forever, as it is written: “When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to Adonai your God for the good land which God has given you.” Blessed is Adonai for the land and its produce. May the Lord our God have mercy on God’s people Israel, God’s city Jerusalem, Zion the abode of God’s glory, the royal house of David, G0d’s anointed one, and the great and holy Temple that bears God’s name. May our God, our Parent, tend and nourish us, sustain and maintain us, and speedily grant us relief from all our troubles. May the Lord make us dependent not on the alms or loans of others, but rather, on God’s full, open and generous hand, so that we may never be humiliated or put to shame. May it be G-d’s will to strengthen us in God’s commandments, especially regarding the seventh day, this great and holy Sabbath, for today is great and holy before God -a day on which to rest and repose in love, according to God’s command. May it be God’s will to grant us relief from all care, sorrow and grief on our day of rest, and may God enable us to see Zion comforted, and Jerusalem the holy city, rebuild. For it is God who is the master of salvation and comfort. Blessed is The Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe, who is our God, our Parent, our Sovereign, our Mighty One, our Creator, our Redeemer, our Maker, the Holy One of Jacob, the Shepherd of Israel, the good Sovereign who does good to all. May God who continually shows us kindness continue offering goodness to us. As God has ever bestowed favors upon us, may God continue to bless us with grace, loving kindness, compassion, deliverance, prosperity, redemption, consolation, sustenance, and mercy; a life of peace and all goodness. May God never withhold goodness from us. May the Merciful One be blessed in heaven and on earth. Harachaman, hu yitbarach bashamayim u-va-aretz. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִתְבָּרַךְ בַּשָׁמַיִם וּבָאָֽרֶץ. May the Merciful One be praised in all generations, be glorified through us to all eternity, and be honored among us forever. Harachaman, hu yishtabach l.dor dorim, v.yitpa-ar banu la-ad u-l.neitzach n.tzachim, v.yit-hadar banu la-ad ul-olmei olamim. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁתַּבַּח לְדוֹר דּוֹרִים, וְיִתְפָּאַר בָּנוּ לָעַד וּלְנֵצַח נְצָחִים, וְיִתְהַדַּר בָּנוּ לָעַד וּלְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים. May the Merciful One grant us an honorable livelihood. Harachaman, hu y.far-n.seinu b.chavod. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְפַרְנְסֵנוּ בְּכָבוֹד. May the Merciful One break the yoke of our oppression and lead us in dignity to our ancient homeland. Harachaman, hu yishbor uleinu mei-al tzavareinu v.hu yolicheinu kom.miyut l.artzeinu. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁבּוֹר עֻלֵּנוּ מֵעַל צַוָּארֵנוּ וְהוּא יוֹלִיכֵנוּ קוֹמְמִיּוּת לְאַרְצֵנוּ. May the Merciful One send abundant blessing upon this dwelling and the table at which we have eaten. Harachaman, hu yishlach b.racha m.ruba babayit hazeh v.al Shulchan zeh she-achalnu alav. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁלַח לָֽנוּ בְּרָכָה מְרֻבָּה בַּבַּיִת הַזֶּה, וְעַל שֻׁלְחָן זֶה שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ עָלָיו. May the Merciful One send Elijah the Prophet to us, and may he bear good tidings of salvation and comfort. Harachaman, hu yishlach lanu et-Eliyahu Hanavi, zachur latov, vivaser-lanu b.sorot tovot y.shu-ot v.nechamot. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁלַח לָנוּ אֶת אֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא זָכוּר לַטּוֹב, וִיבַשֶּׂר לָנוּ בְּשׂוֹרוֹת טוֹבוֹת יְשׁוּעוֹת וְנֶחָמוֹת. May the Merciful One bless all who are gathered here and all their families, as well as all dear to us. Harachaman hu y.vareich et-kol-ham.subim kan, otanu-v.et-kol asher lanu. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְבָרֵךְ אֶת כל המסובים כאן, אוֹתָנוּ וְאֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר לָנוּ, Even as our forefathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were blessed in every way; so may God bless all of us together with a perfect blessing, and let us say: Amen. K.mo she-nitbarchu avoteinu: Avraham, Yitzchak, v.Ya-akov, {v.imoteinu: Sarah, Rivkah, Leah, v.Rachel,} bakol mikol kol, kein y.vareich otanu kulanu yachad bivracha sh.leima, v.nomar: Amein. כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִתְבָּרְכוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ, אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹבַּכֹּל, מִכֹּל, כֹּל, כֵּן יְבָרֵךְ אוֹתָנוּ כֻּלָּנוּ יַחַד בִּבְרָכָה שְׁלֵמָה, וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן. , Bamarom Yelamdu במרום ילמדו Both on their and our own behalf may there be such advocacy on high as shall lead to enduring peace; and may we receive a blessing from God, and righteousness from the God of our salvation; and may we find grace and good understanding in the sight of God and all humanity. Bamarom y’lamdu, aleyhem v’aleynu z’choot sh’tehay l’mishmeret shalom. V’nisah bracha m’et adonai, u’tzdakah m’elohey yish’ey’nu. V’nimtzah chen v’sechel tov b’eyney elohim v’adam. בַּמָּרוֹם יְלַמְּדוּ עֲלֵיהֶם וְעָלֵינוּ זְכוּת, שֶׁתְּהֵא לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת שָׁלוֹם, וְנִשָּׂא בְרָכָה מֵאֵת יְיָ, וּצְדָקָה מֵאֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעֵנוּ, וְנִמְצָא חֵן וְשֵׂכֶל טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי אֱלֹהִים וְאָדָם Recited on Shabbat: May the Merciful One grant us a world that shall be entirely Shabbat and eternal rest. Harachaman, hu yan-chileinu yom shekulo Shabbat umnucha l.chayei haolamim. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יַנְחִילֵנוּ יוֹם שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ שַׁבָּת וּמְנוּחָה לְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָמִים. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְזַכֵּנוּ לִימוֹת הַמָּשִׁיחַ וּלְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא, מַגְדִּיל on weekdays מִגְדּוֹל on Sabbath, Yom Tov and Rosh Chodesh יְשׁוּעוֹת מַלְכּוֹ וְעֹֽשֶׂה חֶסֶד לִמְשִׁיחוֹ לְדָוִד וּלְזַרְעוֹ עַד עוֹלָם. עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם בִּמְרוֹמָיו, הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן. God grants deliverance (on Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh: God is a tower of deliverance) to God.s chosen sovereign, and shows kindness to God.s anointed one, to David, and his descendants forever. May the One who makes peace in the heavens let peace descend on all us and all of Israel, and let us say: Amen. Harachaman hu yezakeinu limot hamashiach u'l'chayei olam habah. Blessing of Spices
Pass around a spice box filled with cinnamon and cloves, a basket with herbs like rosemary and sage, or any spices that smell good to you. Take a deep breath in and let the fragrant scents remind you of the joys of Shabbat as it draws to a close.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא מִינֵי בְשָׂמִים.
Baruch atah, Adonai, Elohaynu melech ha’olam, boray minay vesamim.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who creates different fragrant spices.

It is traditional for husbands to bless their wives after candle lighting, but this tradition doesn’t often resonate for queer couples, let alone straight couples who don’t necessarily fit standard gender roles.
The following blessing can be used by couples of any gender, regardless of their marital status.
Partner 1:
As day turns to night,
And afternoon light fades into inky black,
May we recognize the love bringing us together
Like the twin flames of the Shabbat candles,
Soft and luminous
Partner 2:
May we appreciate and give thanks for this love,
And for the blessings that accompany it,
Just as fruit ripens on the vine
